CHAPTER 21

Piper

Unfamiliar scenery scrolled by as Cole turned onto a primitive road, but Piper trusted his knowledge of Fortuna's back roads. The road curved and climbed a hill. Cole drove slow and avoided ruts. The further they were away from the familiar, the more she relaxed. There was little chance Justin would follow.

"I hated leaving Desire alone with Justin and Ms. Deeds," Cole lamented, gripping the wheel tighter.

"But we left Justin with Desire." Piper giggled, and Cole smirked. "I'm not worried about her. She'll be fine. Justin will be traumatized, though."

"Hopefully enough to leave town for good."

"I doubt it." She tried to lean on Cole's shoulder, but the road was too rough.

As music played, they speculated how Desire had grilled Justin. Forty-five minutes later, Cole stopped the car on a small plateau. Nothing but wildflowers for miles. Justin would have called them weeds. Piper pushed open the door and inhaled deeply. The occasional butterfly flitted around. A breeze fanned her face.

"Watch this." He reached into the car and honked the horn. Butterflies. Hundreds of monarch butterflies took flight.

Piper gasped, dazzled by the natural wonder. Tears threatened, and she touched Cole's arm. He pulled her back against him and held her. He whispered, "I hope you don't mind if we spend the afternoon with my friends."

"Not at all." She sighed back against him.

The aerial show lasted only a few minutes until the butterflies settled again, most hidden once more.

He broke their connection. "There's more." With a grin, he motioned for her to stay. He opened the back door and draped a blanket over his arm.

"Aren't you the sneaky one," she teased with hands on her hips. "How did you stealthily load my car?"

"If I told you my secrets, I'd have to kill you." Cole spread the blanket on the bank of the road. He tapped the blanket.

"You can't kill me if I guess." Lowering herself to the ground, she crossed her legs and glanced up at him.

Cole returned to her car and pulled out his guitar case. "S'pose, that's true. Take your best guess." He opened the case and handed her the guitar to tune.

"Hm." Piper strummed the instrument. "I've been so focused on Justin and avoiding him a twister could have delivered Dorothy Gale from Kansas and I wouldn't have noticed." She turned introspective while she tuned the guitar. When she handed it over she said, "I'm going to guess it was your mother."

"Right you are. We have a winner, ladies and gents." Cole clapped, sending the butterflies heavenward again.

Reclining, she put her hands behind her head. "It's a good thing you didn't bet twenty dollars. A girl could get rich winning bets off the cowboys of Fortuna." He nudged her with his boot and she giggled.

Cole plucked out a few simple songs then played a classical piece. The hectic invaded morning transformed into a soothing afternoon. Butterflies lazily flitting, clouds floating and a handsome man strumming beside her constituted a good day. As relaxed as a cat in a sunbeam, Piper's eyes fluttered closed.
